For this Interaction Design project I chose to create a taximeter app that will calculate the cost of a trip on a taxi to a chosen destination. The users will be able to see costs for more than one taxi company and also have a chance to manually type in rates and distance to calculate the cost of their trip.
After some consideration and a long list of possible applications I decided to create an Interaction design for an app that might be useful to someone and even may be interested in creating one. This taxi calculator app can be a very useful tool when you need to quickly calculate how much money you need to spend on travelling during a business trip or when you plan a conference for a company.
I want to create an app that will be very easy to understand to be user friendly. Based on my experience there are no apps that are the same as mine and those that are similar are very complicated, so I want to bring this app to live by making it as simple and good looking as possible.

An electronic calculator is a small, portable electronic device used to perform operations ranging from basic arithmetic to complex mathematics problems. The first solid state electronic calculator was created in the 1960s, building on the extensive history of tools such as the abacus, and the mechanical calculator. It was developed in parallel with the analog computers of the day.

The pocket sized devices became available in the 1970s, especially after the first microprocessor, the Intel 4004, developed by Intel for the Japanese calculator company Busicom. They later became used commonly within the petroleum industry (oil and gas).

Modern electronic calculators vary: from cheap, giveaway, credit-card-sized models to sturdy desktop models with built-in printers. They became popular in the mid-1970s (as integrated circuits made their size and cost small). By the end of that decade, calculator prices had reduced to a point where a basic calculator was affordable to most and they became common in schools.

Calculators today

Today calculator has become some- thing that we can access from any phone that even kids have when they go to school. We use them on our daily basis in supermarkets, at work, at school or home. They are free and so easy to use. They can be used as a basic calculator or a more com- plex ones that are used in science. Who would have thought 80 years ago that such an innovative product that was very expensive can fit in our pocket and be on our phones? It’s amazing how technology can influence our lives.

Smart phones

Definition

The term ‘smartphone’ refers to a multi functional mobile phone handset that pack in everything from a camera and web browser to a high-density display. To keep these super, high-end mobiles run ning smoothly, smart phones are equipped with powerful micro-processors. These are what enable smartphone users to access more than one function or app simultaneously and ensure that there’s minimal lag at all times. The advanced operating systems that smart phones run on also help offer a smooth user experience for everyone. Some of the operating systems you’re most likely to come across include Symbian OS from Nokia, iPhone OS from Apple, Android from Google, BlackBerry OS from Research In Motion and Windows Phone from Microsoft.

Phone Apps

Applications, commonly referred to as apps, are specific pieces of software that can be downloaded to enhance a smartphone’s functionality. They could be calendar and organiser apps, games, or amp reading tools – the possibilities are limitless. If it’s remotely useful, somebody will have created an app for it.

In order to download apps users can visit the online software store available for their specific operating system. Apple’s App Store offers hundreds of thousands of titles and the Goggle’s Android Market for Android smart phones is rapidly catching up too. Third-party apps markets such as GetJar and Amazon Appstore also offer a huge range of apps, some even exclusive to those stores.
The great thing about apps is that they allow you to change the functionality of your phone whenever you like. Choose a smartphone with an extensive selection of apps and you’ll never be bored of your phone ever again.

Interfaces

Definition

The UI interface is often talked about in conjunc- tion with user experience (UX), which may include the aesthetic appearance of the device, response time and the content that is presented to the user within the context of the user interface.

UI Today

This research is based on my vision of best in- terface designs for apps. In my opinion interface should be simple, stylish and appealing. It should be so attractive to the user, so that the user will want to use the app, share it with friends and stay with it for years.

Considering that this app doesn’t exactly match up the functions that my app will have, I like it. This is a simple one button interface with three colored color scheme. Font sizes help navigate through the app.Customization page is designed with white space that visu- ally divides the screen creating a focal point on the data at the top of the screen.

This app is almost like the one that I will cre- ate. It has a map for distance calculations, list of taxi companies, all rates and even a button to make a booking by phone. The style is fairly simple. Old iOS version basic style is taken as a basis, so it’s very familiar to the user. Green button creates a focal point, so it’s very easy to know that it’s where you need to push to get results.

Anna is an Administrative Assistant at a big Russian corporation. Due to her responsibilities she has to plan a lot of trips for her colleagues and also organize various conferences and conventions. In order to prepare for these conferences and business trips she has to calculate all trip expenses and submit financial requests to accounting department. Usually it takes a lot of time to calculate. Challenges:

The biggest challenge is usually the calculation of taxi trips. She has to go through so much information on websites and make calls to figure out current prices for taxi companies. Proposal:

She would love to have an app that would have all main taxi companies in Russia and would have their rates present, and all she would need to do is to choose the route and see prices for all taxi companies in one place. That way she will be able to choose the one that she suggests to her colleagues to use or even book them a taxi.

Background story:
Andrey is a student who lives in St. Petersburg, but he is from a little town a ways called Arkhangelsk. He came to St. Petersburg to pursue a bachelors degree in Music and Arts. He’s been studying there for 3 years and often plays in random places and sometimes late at night, so he needs to use a taxi pretty often. Since he doesn’t make much yet, he counts every penny he spends, especially when it comes down to taxis that he now takes more often than before.

Challenges:

There are a lot of offers that come to Andrey to go play at various concerts and events, but there’s been situations when he had spend more than 40% of the money he was paid for the concert on a taxi. Now he’s smarter and he counts the offer and the money he needs to spend in order to come and only then decides if it’s worth it.

Proposal:

He would want to have an app that would be able to count how much taxi ride would cost him before he orders them, so that he includes the price in the offers that he receives. It would make his life a lot easier.

In these sketches I wanted to show some ideas of how I believe the app is going to function. The first one has a map and fields to enter addresses, the second one has a “generate” or create a route button. When you press that button, the app is creating a route according to your preferences and then offers you information on the distance, the average price and also provides a list of taxi companies with their rates that you can choose from. You can also order a taxi by clicking the taxi company from the list. It will take you to their website with already filled information according to the app. All you will need to do is click order.

These are some of my other ideas for the app. On the main screen it has buttons for taxi companies that you can go to to see their rates. You can click on them and they will open a pop-up that will show you the information that you want. The third sketch is a page for customized calculations. In case if the company that you are looking for is not on the list, you can manually enter data into the app and it will calculate the price of the trip. The last page is a contact page with taxi companies information in case if you want to visit their site, email or call them.

Scenario 2:
Your boss has asked you for a favor. Find out how much the taxi is going to cost your department for the seminar that you are all planning to visit considering that there’s going to be 3 people in each cab and there’s 15 people overall. Routes will be 20 km one way.
Scenario 3:
You are in a rush. Call a taxi while you are still in the airport waiting for your luggage. You only have 350 rubles and you need to go from Sheremetyevo airport to Vrubelya street 1.

Scenario 2:
User was able to open the app, click on the menu and found “Customized Calculation” tab and “Taxi Rates”. It was a little too much information to memorize. Suggestion was made to simplify the process. Maybe add a drop down menu on “Customized calculator tab with set up rates for all taxi companies. All that will be left to fill is tariff info, persons and distance.
Scenario 3:
User was able to easily create a route to his destination and choose the taxi company with a rate under 350 rubles and then was able to follow to the next tab where he found two buttons and preferred to call a taxi instead of going to the site and ordering online.

Wireframes concepts
These are my wireframes concepts. I decided to create this app with basic functions of creating a route and then based on the distance and time the app will show how much it’s going to cost using different popular taxi companies. In this case I decided to use only 3 (Gett, Uber and Yandex). I also want to make a function, so that they user could order a taxi without having to go to other apps and retyping the same information on their sites. I have also included rates and contacts pages. These are my rough wireframes that I will be building my app upon. They have given me a feel of how my app should work. I even decided to create an interactive design with InVision using wireframes before I create digital compositions.

This has been the most challenging part of testing the app, because InVision doesn’t have capabilities to type the text, so I had to create a module that would help the user to guide him through. The test was to calculate how much a ride with 2 people, no waiting time and 20 km distance would cost using Gett taxi. The user was able to get that information. User explained that it would have been easier to be able to choose a company with prebuilt rates instead of having to type them all. This test gave me an idea to create a drop down with a choice to choose taxi companies with pre built rates, so that they autofill when the user opens the calculator.

Test Results
Doing this usabiility test, I’ve received feedback to work on customization calculator interaction. It’s not clear for the user what he should do when after he chooses the company on the calculator. Visually I didn’t change anything here, but I changed the interaction. Instead of having to click twice on the same section, I added timer that redirects thee user directly to section he just chose.

Results

I was able to achieve all of my goals. During the process of creating an app I’ve benefited from feedback and user test that I have done prior to finalizing the app. I created an intuitive design that is very familiar for anyone who hasn’t ever used any taxi apps. Since it’s based on the map search and most users have used Google or any other kind of map apps, it will be very easy to navigate and find the information that they are looking for.

The color scheme of the app is very familiar, so it’s recognizable when the user is searching for an app in the app store or looking at reviews. This app would make a lot of peoples lifes a lot easier because it can compare taxi companies with pre set rates. These functions are handy because all taxi companies have different rates and it’s so hard to compare them between each other and calculate how much the trip is going to cost you and only rely on the experience and feedback.

Before creating an app I have tested the idea of this app on my friends and received very positive feedback. Once the app was created, I tested it again and was very pleased with their positive comments and excitement about its realization for production.
